Not sure what to read next?  Want to see a review on a book?  Here are some places you can go:
  • Common Sense Media--this is a great site to get reviews on books, movies, video games, etc.  The reviews are made by adults and children and gives a detailed review of the content and story, including recommended reading age.
  • Novelist--this is a database of books that contains reviews, recommended age range and suggestions for similar books.  Novelist can be accessed through the Downers Grove Public Library under their research tab.  You need a library card number to access the database.
  • Amazon Books--many books on Amazon include reviews from professional literary magazines.  You just need to scroll through the general information until you get to the reviews.
  • Ask a librarian!  Feel free to contact Mrs. Loversky at any time if you need help finding a book.  Email, phone, note, carrier pigeon--whatever way works best!  Don't forget the librarians at the public library!  They are fabulous and are always there to help.

Check out this great website for grade K-3!  Not only does it contain amazing information about animals, science and people, it also had an audio portion so you can listen to the information.  Just click on the picture below to access it.  Please see Mrs. Loversky for login information.

Illinois Award Books

At El Sierra, we participate in the various Illinois Award Books.  Every year, the Illinois School Library Media Association lists 20 books per award that the students throughout Illinois can vote on.  Click on the links below to access PDFs of the different lists.

Monarch Award:  The Monarch Award is for students in grades K-3.  These books are mainly picture and beginning chapter books.  Students must read 5 books in order to participate.

Bluestem Award:  The Bluestem Award is for students in grades 3-5.  These books are longer in length than the Monarch books.  Students must read 4 books in order to vote.

Rebecca Caudill Award:  The Caudill Award is for students in grades 4-8.  These books are longer chapter books and are designed for the older reader.  Students must read 3 books in order to vote.

Voting for each award book list is in February/March.
